pearl barley
tonight i began a love affair with pearl barley; a grain i have never cooked before and am so sad it hasn’t been in my life until now. but yay for finding it in the shop and buying it and bringing it home last week, waiting for the right time to cook it.
i went to the markets on the weekend and i bought kale again. i started to hunt down a recipe to extend my kale repertoire (having cooked the same kaley pasta bake last night as i did a few weeks ago). moosewood’s daily special came to the rescue, with a tomato, kale and barley soup.
served here with fetta and pepper on top, and fresh bread courtesy of jane. a hearty soupy dinner to mark kate’s last night in sydney. she’s back to adelaide tomorrow, i’m back to sharing the house with only a little grey cat.

this is what is often known as a food blog. recipes, photos, stories that are almost always food related.
right now i'm a phd student living in sydney, but have lived many other lives through the history of this blog, so please explore and discover.
you can see my every day project (done in 2010) here until november 2010.
i also put stuff on the internet over here: luminen.net, metaphorical jam and chutney making included.

oh paris, i’ll cook you pearl barley any day!
you can make “barlotto” with pearl barley. It’s risotto with barley not rice!
boil (covered) 1/3 cup pearl barley, 1 bay leaf & 5 cups water for 25 mins. soak 7 sundried (not in oil) tomatoes in 1/2 cup hot water.
saute 1 chopped onion and 2 minced garlic cloves in oil until translucent, set aside.
remove the bay leaf from the barley, add the onions and garlic, 2 tins of chopped tomatoes, 2 teaspoons minced dill, pinch cayenne, teaspoon salt. chopped the soaked tomatoes, add to the soup with the soaking liquid.
bring to the boil, add 2 cups chopped kale, simmer for 5 mins.
serve with pepper and fetta.
one comment during the consumption of this soup was along the lines of ‘it tastes like tinned tomato soup (in a good way!)’
