cabbage rolls

06Jun06

i caught a taxi from work to the city today for a meeting. as we were driving under kings cross my taxi driver called out 'oh!' and sighed loudly.

i asked him what was wrong, "dinner. i remembered i have to cook dinner tonight."
i sat for a few minutes, then asked him what he was cooking. "cabbage rolls"
"i live by myself and so i'm cooking enough for a few nights. they take a long time to make so i need to make lots in one go"

i ended up writing down his cabbage roll recipe, and promised to make them tonight. but not the pork mince version, more likely the vegetarian version. he didn't like the sound of that, but i do love my vege mince!

he was going to have them with bechamel sauce, boiled potatoes and carrots (boiled because he only has one steamer and it will be steaming the cabbage rolls). i had mine with a bechamel/haloumi sauce and steamed potatoes. and lots of parsley. the photo doesn't make it look that enticing, but it was tasy, i promise!

cabbage rolls

jens's ("you say it like the japanese currency") cabbage rolls
cabbage
mince (of your choice, i chose vege)
onion, chopped (jens grated his)
beaten egg
flour
salt and pepper

pull cabbage leaves off the cabbage and steam till tender
mix together mince, onion, egg, flour, salt and pepper
put small handfuls of the mince mixture into a cabbage leaf and roll
put the rolls in the steamer basket in one layer
steam for about 15-20 minutes (meat probably needs longer)

serve hot with a bechamel sauce
